NEPAL
National News: The protests reached PM Oli’s hometown in Damak, Koshi Province, nearly 400 km from Kathmandu. Angry mobs hurled stones at his ancestral house. Police were forced to fire warning shots to disperse the crowd and restore order in the area. Across Nepal, protesters-mostly young people-blocked the East West Highway. Fires were set at several points, disrupting traffic and cutting off transport routes. Authorities confirmed at least 18 deaths and dozens of injuries as violence spread beyond the capital city.
The heart of the protests remains the government’s sudden ban on Facebook, X, YouTube, and other platforms. Thousands stormed the streets of Kathmandu, defying police barricades. For many young Nepalese, the ban represents an attack on freedom and expression.
Protesters broke through barbed wire and forced riot police to retreat from Parliament. In response, security forces used tear gas, water cannons, and live rounds. The violence has shocked the country, with scenes of chaos unfolding in front of Parliament. The sound of gunfire and tear gas shells created panic among locals living near the Parliament area
Many families rushed indoors as the clashes grew more intense. Eyewitnesses say the protesters seemed determined to push past every barricade, no matter the cost.
The government responded by widening the curfew to multiple areas. Restrictions now cover the residences of the President, Vice President, and Prime Minister in Baluwatar, along with nearby zones. Heavy police deployment is seen guarding institutions and government properties. Streets that were once busy are now completely deserted, with armored vehicles patrolling every corner.
Residents have been asked to stay inside their homes until further notice. The fear of sudden violence has left shops shut and daily life at a complete standstill.
The crisis has placed Nepal at a dangerous crossroads. With protests spreading, casualties mounting, and public anger growing, the Oli government faces immense pressure. Whether dialogue or more crackdowns follow, Nepal’s fragile stability now hangs in the balance of uncertainty.
Political experts warn that mishandling the unrest could push the country toward a deeper crisis. The opposition has already demanded immediate talks and reversal of the social media ban. For ordinary citizens, the hope for peace feels distant as uncertainty clouds Nepal’s future.
